The coat that goes out whatever the forecast says.
For the dog who's already at the door before you've found your boots - and for the one who needs a little more convincing when it's cold and grey outside. Just as you'd think twice about a long summer walk in the midday heat, a cold, wet winter's day is worth a second thought too. Sometimes the kindest thing is giving them a little extra protection - and then getting out there and enjoying your walk together no matter what the clouds say.
The Powder Hound Vest is built for exactly that.
The sleeveless vest cut means nothing restricts the shoulders or front legs - so whether your dog is bounding through fields or picking their way along a muddy path, they move as freely as they would without it.
The waterproof, windproof shell keeps the rain out, high-loft insulation keeps warmth in, and the vest silhouette wraps further than most coats - extending over the hips and thighs where dogs often feel the cold most. An insulated storm collar folds up when conditions turn, and stretch leg loops make the whole thing easy to get on and off even with muddy paws involved.
It clips straight over most harnesses via the back leash portal, and a light loop lets you attach the Ruffwear Beacon Safety Light for the short days when the dark arrives before the walk is done.

Getting it right matters as much to us as it does to you. Finding the right thing sometimes needs a bit of exploring - piecing together the right parts of the puzzle. If the final piece is still missing lets figure it out together - drop us a message.

All three share the same waterproof, insulated construction - the difference is coverage. The Vest covers the body, hips, and thighs with a sleeveless silhouette, making it a great all-rounder for most dogs in cold, wet weather. The Jacket adds full sleeve coverage for dogs who feel the cold more in their legs and chest. The Coverall goes furthest - full body coverage including the legs - for maximum protection in the most demanding conditions. If your dog runs warm or tends to overheat, the Vest is usually the right starting point. The sleeveless vest cut also means nothing restricts the shoulders or front legs - so whether your dog is bounding through fields or picking their way along a muddy path, they move as freely as they would without it. If they feel the cold easily or you're heading into serious winter weather, the Jacket or Coverall will serve them better.
Yes - the back leash portal means you can layer the vest over almost any standard walking harness and clip your lead straight through to the ring underneath, without needing to remove or refit your existing setup. It's worth checking the fit with your specific harness before heading out for the first time, as bulkier harnesses may affect how the vest settles across the back. If you're unsure which harness works best underneath a winter coat, drop us a message and we'll help you work it out.
More than enough - and it goes beyond rain. A 10,000mm hydrostatic head rating means the shell fabric can withstand sustained, heavy downpours without letting moisture through, but it's also built for snow - which sits against the fabric, melts, and keeps applying pressure over time. The PFAS-free PU finish and Bemis seam tape stop water getting through the seams too. For a typical UK winter walk, whether that's driving rain or a snowy morning, it should keep your dog dry throughout.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent - avoid standard detergents, which can leave residue on technical fabrics and strip away the waterproof coating over time. Hang to dry; don't bleach, iron, or dry clean.
With regular use, the DWR finish will naturally degrade and you may notice the fabric starting to absorb moisture rather than bead it off. When that happens, Ruffwear recommend Nikwax Tech Wash® for cleaning and Nikwax TX.Direct® for restoring waterproofing - both are designed specifically for technical fabrics and synthetic insulation. Full guidance on caring for your Ruffwear gear is on the Ruffwear website.
If anything ever happens while you're out, whoever finds this card knows exactly who to call to make sure your animals are safe at home.
